ABSTRACT

This research study was undertaken to examine the impact of management information system on the performance of PHCN, Sokoto. The study focused on key management staff of the organization. The study identifies certain problems hindering the effective performance of PHCN, Sokoto and links it to either lack of MIS or its poor implementation, and by so identified the variables for the study as dependent and independent variables. The independent variables were the extent of practice and implementation of MIS, and the dependent variable was profitability and growth. Primary data method of data collection was engaged through the use of questionnaires. The researcher made use descriptive techniques such as frequencies, percentages, and Pearson correlation was used to analyse the variables and test the hypothesis of the study. The finding of the revealed that there is a strong positive relationship between Management Information System practice and the growth and profitability of PHCN, Sokoto. The study recommended that PHCN and other related firms should develop and acquire appropriate and suitable computer software and program to enhance further growth and expansion. In the same vein, skilful and experienced IT workers should be employed to manage the IT department of the company.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The application of management information system in most organizations has been on the rise over the last few years, not only among private firms, but also among government establishments. MIS as it is mostly called are typically computer systems which comprise of five primary components for its management: the hardware part, the software part, data, procedures, and people. Weihrich and Koontz (2001) tried to explain Management Information system as a function of systems which involves gathering, comparing, analyzing, and dispersing internal and external information to the enterprise in a timely, effective, and efficient manner.

Taking Power Holdings Company of Nigeria as a case for this study, we could trace it background to being the first power station in Nigeria, when it was then known as Nigeria Electric Power Authority (NEPA).  NEPA was established in Lagos in 1989 at the present site of the NEPA headquarters. Linking the background energy administration in Nigeria to PHCN), one cannot but mention recall the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) and Nigeria Dam Authority (NDA) as the beginners of energy generation and distribution agencies in Nigeria. The Nigerian federal government in September of 1969 decided to merge the two energy generation and distribution bodies ECN and NDA into a single administrative unit in a verge to manage the duplication of resources by establishing a zonal and district office. The zones was vested with the mandate to monitor and supervise the supply and distribution of electricity to consumers, monitor cash inflow and outflow, and implement all policies by the government, which was then National Electricity Power Authority (NEPA). Despite the later transition to Power Holdings Company of Nigeria as a result of privatization of government enterprises in 2013, NEPA had become a household name. PHCN became a transitional corporation with eighteen energy generation and distribution Companies in its control, they are: (11 local distribution companies, 6 generation companies and 1 transmission company) created from NEPA, but under the regulation of  Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). 

Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Plc produces and distributes power through its subsidiaries which include: Distribution Companies (DISCO), Generation Companies (GENCO), and Transmission and Systems operations Companies (TRANSYCO). Because Its services include construction and engineering of power generating units, including maintenance and servicing of power grids and dams operations, the researcher believes that all these can only be effectively managed and controlled with the application and implementation of Management Information System for its coordination, integration and dissemination of information. Hence, this study intends to investigate and evaluate the impact of management information system on the performance of PHCN.


1.2 Statement of the problem

One of the challenges faced by management information system in achieving its corporate objectives is that it has not received high priority as it ought, despite its crucial importance. 

In the researcher’s opinion, some inclusive problems that may be associated with PHCN in terms of MIS implementation is the inability of workers to use and handle computers effectively, difficulty in implementing new initiatives, outdated systems and lack of maintenance culture, lack of effective communication system and tools (Munirat, Sanni, & Kazeem, 2014). 

This study felt an urgent need for more systematic and empirical efforts and investigated the role of management information system on the organizational performance of PHCN.


1.3 Research Question

1. To what extent has Management Information system if fully implemented influenced the profitability of PHCN, Sokoto?

2. To what extent has the practice of Management Information system positively impact on the growth of PHCN?


1.4 Objective of study

The main objective of this study is the evaluation of management information system and its impact on the performance of PHCN, Sokoto.

Other specific objectives are as follows:

1. To evaluate the impact of MIS on the profitability of the firm

2. To ascertain whether the practice of MIS has any impact on the growth of the firm


1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypotheses of this study stated in the null form are: 

Hypothesis One

Ho: There is no significant positive relationship between the practice of MIS and the profitability of PHCN, Sokoto.

Hypothesis Two

Ho: There is no significant positive relationship between the implementation and use of MIS on the growth of PHCN, Sokoto


1.6 Significance of the study

The study on the evaluation of the impact of management information system on the performance of Power Holdings Company of Nigeria would be of immense benefit to the staff and management of PHCN, to scholars who wished to gain understanding on the subject of MIS. The study would be of benefit to the Federal Government of Nigeria in the aspect of policy making and management of public-private organizations, to government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and to the students who wished to carry out further research on the application of MIS.


1.7 Scope of the study

The scope of this study was to evaluate the impact of management information system on the performance of PHCN, with particular reference to Sokoto operation. This study focused on key management staff of the organization. Data collected were within a considerable period of 5 years from 2012 to 2017 to ascertain the practice of MIS and its impact on performance. 


1.8 Definition of terms

Organization: An agency, component or entity that has oversight responsibility for one or more business units, each of which has purview over the activities of a number of projects.

Performance Goal:  A target level of an activity expressed as a tangible, measurable objective, against which achievement can be compared.

Performance Measure:  A quantitative or qualitative characterization of performance.

Chief Information Officer (CIO): The executive primarily responsible for all IT concerns throughout an organization, including information resource management, IT capital planning, IT change management, and various other management and technical functions related to information technology.

System: The activity of working together in a coordinated fashion towards achieving an objective.

Output: These are devices that allow the computing system to output result of processing

Data base: An organized set of information that is stored in a computer system for reference purpose.
