ABSTRACT

This research work is an investigation into The Role of Effective Communication in Organizational Performance. A case study of Kogi Local Government area. The research work is divided into five chapters. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources of data in the process compiling this project. In analyzing the data, the use of simple percentage method was adopted for easy understanding. It was revealed that the structure of an organization along with the inter-relationship between the various units in the organization to a large extent determine the existing communication channel within the organization. At the end, it was recommended that since all communication in an organization are meant to serve different purposes, the administrators and managers of various organizations should endeavour to classify them according to the purpose they are intended to serve.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Effective management of people for the achievement of organizational objectives requires a combination of factor of which the willingness of people to work together may be there. The effectiveness may be hampered by improper coordination due to poor system of administration.

It is therefore, no exaggeration to say that communication is the means by which organization cannot function effectively without proper coordination of employees, units and departments with part management communications forms an integral part in the dealing of any organization.

Without effective communication there cannot be social formations. Within the organization, there must be communication between individuals who interact as social beings (interpersonal communication).

The role of effective communication in organizational performance cannot be over-emphasized. This is because organizations are established to achieve specific aims and objectives.

Organizational objectives can only be achieved through the collective efforts of employees who must communicate with organization with its external environment on the other hand, without effective communication in an organization, the objectives of the organization can not be realized. Effective communication in organization enhance the administration network and function in an organization.

This is because all organizations have formal structure with defined authority and relationship within the organization.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

There is wide spread research interest in information and communication. It is universally proclaimed that communication is crucially important for sustainable development. Communication has made it possible to quickly find and distribute information in an organization. It is no surprise therefore why many initiative have been taken at national and international level to support local government efforts to develop a communication infrastructure.

Effective communication is now reshaping and revolutionizing organization’s communication globally. Its impact on economic activities of government businesses, and small entrepreneurs is phenomenal.

The importance of communication can not be over emphasized. People used communication to plan carry out their decisions. More than 98.5% of Nigeria organizations both private and public benefits from this usage.

Due to the challenges bedeviling the local government area system especially lack of training of staff, delay in payment of salary and the bureaucratic bottlenecks of civil services. Therefore, without effective communication, there cannot be social formations.

It was also believed that most organization failed to understand and realized the role of effective communication on other organizational and administration performance.

1.3  OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objectives of the study is to find out how the role of effective communication enhance organizational performance.

  1. To assess the effectiveness of communication in enhancing the performance of Kogi local government
  2. To determine the extent of effective communication on organizational performance
  3. To know the various mechanisms put in place by the organization for effective communication.
  4. To make necessary recommendations that will enhance the performance of organizations through effective communication.

1.4  RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions have been posed as the guides for this study.

  1. What are the strategies adopted by Kogi Local government area in enhancing effective communication?
  2. What is the nature of communication process in Kogi local government area.
  3. What are the viable obstacles towards the realization of these objectives?
  4. How beneficial is effective communication to Kogi local government area?

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Effective management of people for the achievement of organizational objectives requires a combination of factor of which the willingness of people to work together may be there. The effectiveness may be hampered by improper coordination due to poor system of administration.

Thus, the significance of this research work are that it will provide input to policy formulators on the politics of performance.

It will also serve as a contribution to the study as literature on this subject matter where as other researcher can gain insight as reference material.

If the recommendations is properly implemented, it will definitely increase the performance of Kogi Local government area and other organizations both public and private.

1.6  SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Effective communication has become imperative in any organization but this study is concerned with the administrative communication system in Kogi Local government (Koton-Kaarfi). The study covers the period between 2006 till date.

The study is limited by a number of factors which include the following:

TIME FACTOR: The time frame for the submission of the research work was too short to dig into the detailed information that would have enhanced the work.

FINANCE: The researcher also faced the problem of money (fund). This hindered her from travelling far and wind within the state to get information necessary for this research work.

SHORTAGE OF RELEVANT DATA: The researcher could not get adequate information about this work from Kogi Local government (Koton-Karfi) because of un-coperative attitude of the staff. Inspite of the above problems, the researcher had been able to unveil the information that could see the work through.

1.7  DEFINITION OF TERMS

COMMUNICATION: This refers to the transfer of information from one person (sender) to the other (receiver) with such information being understood by the person the receiver.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATION: This is the type of communication that involves the internal components of an organization e.g. people, structure, money and technology.
