ABSTRACT The puqiose of the study was to establish the relationship between leadership and employee performance at Mpanga Tea Factory. Leadership is the fundamental oxygen for any of any striving organization for survival, however, Mpanga Tea Factory are lacking such ingredients in its daily operation. This was according to the information revealed in years back. According to the revealed by the company annual magazine, mismanagement, autocratic leadership and arbitrary ter111ination of employees were the order of the day. Under this research topic various objectives were developed to aid the researcher in the study and this included; to find the leadership styles being used at Mpanga Tea Factory, to establish whether leadership affects employee at Mpanga Tea Factory, to establish the barriers of leadership at Mpanga Tea Factory and lastly to establish the 111easures to effective leadership at Mpanga Tea Factory. The literature of this study were both from secondary and primary sources. Secondary sources of literature were to find out the views of other scholars in relation to the topic under study. For instance according to Robins(2000), various leadership styles such as democratic leadership, autocratic, liases fair and hands on leadership styles were identified. Secondary sources of data also revealed that leadership has a direct positive and negative effect on employees' perfor111ance. Further111ore, Davis (2003) identified dishonesty and lack of integrity, poor communication skills, and untrustworthiness as the major barrier of leadership. Qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used during the research. Under the qualitative method, descriptio11s were used to analyze the research finding where as quantitative method involved the use of numerical figures to describe the research findings. The research chose Mpanga Tea Factory as the case study where the research was carried out. The population under study was 331 employees of which 200 were chosen as the sample size. In addition to that, questionnaires, interviews, observation were also used to collect data. V According to the first objective of the study which was to find out the leadership styles in Mpanga Tea factory, the research revealed that Democratic leadership style was the common style of leadership with 66 respondents representing 33%. This was followed by Hands on leadership style with 56 respondents representing 28%. The third was liaises fair leadership style with 46 respondents representing 23%. Lastly was autocratic leadership style with 32 respondents representing 16%. According to the second objective, the study revealed that leadership had a positive effect on perfo1111ance with 142 respondents representing 71 %. While 48 respondents representing 24% were of the view that leadership had a negative impact on perfo1111ance. The third objective of the study was 10 establish the barriers of leadership and the research revealed that poor communication, lack of honesty and trustworthiness were the major barriers of leadership at Mpanga Tea Factory According to the forth objective of the study, the research identified various measures to effective leadership and these included effective communication skills, job redesign and developing a culture of integrity and honesty. In conclusion, the study revealed that democratic leadership was the common leadership style at Mpanga Tea Factory. The study also revealed that leadership had a positive effect on employee performance at Mpanga Tea Factory. Furthermore, poor communication skills was seen as the major barrier of leadership. Lastly, developing effective communication skills was the main measure to promote effective leadership The researcher developed various recommendations in order to promote effective leadership in Mpanga Tea Factory. They included promoting effective communication, use of open door policy, use of simplified and friendly language, promoting flexible working methods.
