ABSTRACT

The study which was entitled “the effects of insurgency on the Socio-economic development of North Eastern Nigeria” focused on Wukari Local Government Area of Southern Taraba in Taraba State. It had as its objectives the need to identify the relationship between the standard of living and insurgency, to examine the effects of insurgency on the socio-economic development of North Eastern Nigeria and to identify measures of controlling insurgency. The research sought to answer the following questions: is there a relationship between the standard of living and insurgency, does insurgence have any effect on the socio-economic development of societies and what are the possible solutions to the problem of insurgence in Nigeria. These questions gave rise to the following assumptions: there is a relationship between standard of living and insurgency and insurgency has socio-economic effects on the development of societies. Armed with these premise, several literatures were reviewed in an attempt to either substantiate or debunk the claim and the Frustration Aggression theory was used a as a theoretical platform in this regard.  Methodologically, the research relied on application of the clustered sampling technique to collate data from the study area and adopted the use of frequency table and simple percentage method to quantitatively and qualitatively analyse data collected from the field. The data presentation and analysis revealed that insurgency affects the standard of living and that it also affects socio-economic development of societies; most especially Wukari the study area. It was based on these findings that the study made the underlisted recommendations: That the Nigerian government must continue in her bid to effectively alleviation poverty, that human capital development programs should be introduced for youth who are most vulnerable and susceptible to recruitment and radicalization, that local, state, and federal level of government should establish demonstration farms or workshops to give youth vocational skills or knowledge that allow them to be self-employed in gainful enterprises. that the government also should establish business development service centers in each of Nigeria’s 776 local government areas, adequately funded and staffed with skilled personnel to offer business development and career advice to jobless youth as well as facilitate young entrepreneurs’ access to credit or start-up funds, provide coaching services, and distribute market information data to inform youths’ decisions about career paths etc.
