ABSTRACT

Alaago-Alapoti area constitutes part of the Eestern Dahomey Basin of South-Western Nigeria and it is characterized by different formations. Samples were collected from this area and were subjected to the laboratory for test. Nine smaples were collected from Alaago-Alapo area, five hand-dug wells and four boreholes sampled and investigated in the persent study. This study characterises the physicchemical quality of ground water obtained from the hang-dug wells and boreholes. To get a clean water from the boreholes and wells some physical and chemical investigation were carried out from the wells in Alaago-Alapoti using standard methods and equipments. The samples were analysed to determine thethe presence and concentration of cation and anions. The results shows that the pH values range from4.28-5.59 in Alaago and 4.28-5.22 in Alapoti which indicate slightly acidic water. The TDS range of the water samples is between 130-140mg/l in Alaago and 300-500mg/l in Alapoti, Electrical Conductivity ranges from 45- 45 uS/cm in Alaago and 36-50uS/cm,in Alapoti. The samples collected at Alapoti have a sodium mean value of 648.6 and ranges from 864-466, while that have Alaago has a mean value of 636.6 and ranges from 180-680 which is high compared to the WHO standard., Calcium in Alapoti ranges from 2-12 and has a mean value of 6 and in Alaago it ranges from 4-150, Potassium ranges from 3.8- 7.5 with mean value of 6 in Alapoti and ranges from 3.4- 9.6 with the mean value of 6.93, Magnesium in Alapoti area has a mean value of 138 and range of 126-160 and that of Alaago have a mean of 44 and range of 0-132, Bicarbonate range from 8-26 with the mean value of 13.3 mg/l in Alapoti while Alaago has a range of 44- 68 with a mean value of 128.6. The water is not good for human use, it is risky to human health
