ABSTRACT

This study was carried out in Kawalase Division, Turkana Central District to find out factors contributing to poor academic performance among girls of Kawalase Division and low completion as girls progress towards completion of their eight years of primary education despite the government’s initiative to promote girl-child education through Africa Girls Education Initiative (AGI) project in Arid and Semi-Arid areas in Kenya~ A desire to have girls achieve academically it motivated the researcher to carry out the study.

The researcher in pursuit of getting the solutions to the existing problem used the quantitative approach and survey as a method to identify the causes beneath girls’ academic achievement in Kawalase division. It was by the use of this approach that data was collected from different groups of people in Kawalase division, having free and compulsory education is not therefore enough, much more has to be done to promote the education of girl child. From the research several factors that contribute to the problem above have been cited, which include socio-economic, socio-cultural, teacher interaction and environmental factor.
