A SURVEY OF OCCUPATIONAL PROBLEMS OF SECRETARIES IN FIRST BANK PLC ENUGU

ABSTRACT   
The topic of the study is A survey of occupational problems of secretaries in First Bank plc Okpara Avenue Enugu. The objective of the study was to find out the occupational problems, the effects of occupational problems of secretaries in business organizations. The research reviewed some related literature on the meaning of occupational problems, causes and efforts of occupational problems and finally the solutions to the reason for occupational problem in secretarial profession. The researcher was able to find out that age, lack of proper training, lack of prestige and security of employment and lack of provision like accommodation are some reasons for occupational problems. And the occupational problems have some negative efforts on the secretarial profession. The researcher recommended that adequate training, job satisfaction and accommodation should be given to secretaries.   Secretarial profession should be well constituted to be more attractive.

INTRODUCTION
1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:
    Secretary refers to a person who performs routines, administrative, or personal takes for a superior. Those in secretary occupation perform duties such s typing, computer processions, and scheduling for an executive. Secretaries are after hardworking, important members of a business its administrative working better than anyone else. Since the renaissance until the late 19th Century, men had assumed the little of secretary in the 1880, with the invention of the typewriters; more women began to enter the filed since war 1. However, the role of secretary has been primarily associated with woman. By the 1980s, fewer me are entering the secretarial occupation.
    In an effort to promote professionalism amongst secretaries, the National Secretaries Association was created in 1942. As technology continues to expand office across the profession was greatly evaded office automation and organization structure had led secretaries to assume a wider range of responsibilities. One researcher for many secretaries now provide training or orientation of new job in order out new jobs they conduct research on the interest and troubleshot new office technologies. In the midst of those, however, their responsibilities have remained much the same in their old job until a tine they make a shift.
    Secretaries are responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to run an organization and maintain proper work ethic. Precisely Secretarial duties range of filling, managing, project, conducting researching and providing information on the telephone, postal and e-mail. They also may prepare correspondence and handle travel arrangement. With the above unique functions played by  secretaries, it is sorrowfully observed that occupational problem which Ozigi, (1989) defined as picking up job in another discipline or field  of endeavor  out-side what one has been working for some years. This trend his affected the secretarial profession. At present some secretaries who have been properly trained vehemently take up job in another field of specialization, while abandoning the secretarial job. This idea of leaving ones occupation or profession to another can be observed in another profession but it is more pronounced in the secretarial profession.
    In first Bank Plc, it has been reported that there is dive need for secretaries in the office. Reasons being that so many former secretaries in the local government have moved from their profession, administrative function and other managerial jobs. It is based I this problem in that the researcher wishes to find out the immediate and remote causes of occupational  problem in secretarial profession.
1.2    Statement of Problem
It is very surprising to observe the rate at which some trained and experienced secretaries abandon secretarial jobs to other fields. Some of them after being trained as professional secretaries pick up jobs in other disciplines. This has resulted to a case of brain-drain in the profession. Despite the number of graduate secretaries being turned by our numerous tertiary institutions, the labour market is still lacking qualified and competent secretaries to perform secretarial duties, this is majority because these graduate secretaries prefer to work as mangers, salesmen and women and marketers instead of secretaries. The question is why do those secretaries who are well trained in the profession prefer to work as other staff instead of as secretaries. Presently, it has not been known if lack of proper remuneration is the problem to see in first Bank Plc Enugu. It has not also been known if lack of provision of centre I countries like giving some loans and accommodation allowance is the problem of secretaries.
Hence, this study is aimed at determining the occupational problems of secretaries in first Bank plc Enugu.
1.3    Objective of the Study:
a.    Purpose or objective of the study is therefore to find out:

b.    Acts of occupational problems on secretarial profession.
Effects of occupational problems on the secretaries in first Bank Plc  Enugu. The causes of misconception and disregard for secretaries and their profession.
1.4    Scope of the Study
The study was carried out to cover first Bank plc Enugu state. The study focused only on the cause of occupational problem in secretarial profession and the categories or category of staff involved in occupational change. This involves the junior and senior staff in secretarial studies. In first Bank plc Enugu, there is well structured office arrangement where each staff performs different function in his or her area of specialization. It is also divided in department for administrative convenience. This has made the study to focus on all the various staff functions in each department.
1.5    Significance of the Study:
The study will be of great significance to secretaries, and those who wish to make secretarial profession their life career, the administrators, researchers, member of the public and first Bank plc.
The study will educate secretaries to appreciate the career prospect and prestige in their profession. It will encourage those that wish to make secretarial profession a life career not to give up because they will benefit a lot in secretarial profession.
The administrators of every organization will after reading this project appreciate the efforts of their secretaries and then change their negative attitude.
Furthermore, researchers will benefit from this study for their related studies.
