Diabetes mellitus commonly known as diabetes is a group of metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar level over a prolonged period (WHO,2014)

This  research is aimed at investigating effect of solanum macrocapon and Anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide on some blood parameters of alloxan induced diabetic rats.

The effects of four eggplant varieties on haematological indices and weight of organs in albino rats were evaluated. A total of 30 albino rats were randomly distributed into six major groups of treatment, Group A were administered with Feed and water only, B with Feed and water only C with 5ml/kg of Glibenclamide, D with 250mg/kg of aqueous extract, E with 500mg/kg of aqueous extract and F with 750mg/kg  of aqueous extract.

Result from this study showed that the induction of diabetes to the experimental animals led to an increase in the size of the liver, pancrease, spleen, kidney, duodenum and stomach. The treatment with glibenclimide led to a reversal in the organ mass, however administration with aqueous extract of Solanum macrocarpon was more potent than Glibenclimide at 500 and 750mg/kg.

The heamatological profile of experimental animals was also investigated. There were alterations in the level of blood parameters. There was an increase in the level of WBC, HBG, NEU, LYM, and MONO, HCT, PLT in diabetic animals when compared with the control animals. The treatment with Glibenclimde and aqueous extract Solanum macrocarpon. Aqueous extract of Solanum macrocarpon only was found to be more effect in reversing these disorders at 500mg/kg.

The administration of aqueous extract of Solanum macrocarpon was found to have therapeutic effect which is evident in its ability to reverse organ weight and pathological alterations.
