STUDENTS’ SATISFACTION WITH HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN
ABSTRACT

This study assesses student’s satisfaction with hostel accommodation in University of Benin. Specifically, the study sought to determine the influence of demographic attributes on students satisfaction with hostel accommodation and to determine the extent to which students are satisfied with hostel facilities such as bedroom, bathroom, common room, pantry and support services. The population consists of all students in University of Benin, Benin city, Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 215 respondents through a convenience sampling technique out of which 200 were returned and found usable through the use of statistical tools including simple mean, frequency, percentage, T-Test, and analysis of variance of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The study found that majority of the respondents are not satisfied with hostel facilities and demographic attributes such as sex, age, level, faculty and halls of residence significantly and do not significantly affect their level of satisfaction. It is therefore recommended that government in collaboration with school management should endeavor to repair and bring to standard hostel buildings such as bedroom, bathroom, common room, and pantry and support services because these are the areas where student shows dissatisfaction.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
A hostel is a building that provides cheap accommodation and meals to student under the mandate of hostel management. It is the responsibility of hostel administrator to provide cheap and favorable hostels for the student appropriate academic performance. Over the years hostels were mainly built for student whose home were far from the learning environment and those who cannot afford accommodation outside the learning premises but nowadays student whose home are beside the learning environment are opting for hostel accommodation while some are interested in the money the hostel will generate that is applying and selling it out. Appropriate hostels environment provide student with efficiency to attain mastery of their courses after classes since there is a little distance between their hostel room and their learning environment (library, laboratory and so on).
Ubong (2007) stated that students hostels comprises of a particular type of building which provide shelter for students attending the University thereby presenting extra significant necessity that is, atmosphere that is comfortable and amenable to learning and academic success. To succeed in this regard, students amenities as a designed environment must be able to provide the needed indoor that affect the efficiency and productivity of the students. Also, Ubong noted that this particular true because hostel goes beyond just protection from the element of weather such as rain, sun, wind and dust but include social aspect of being able to interact and socialized with friends.
Furthermore, the function of students hostel goes beyond just providing accommodation for the students but also enhances their interpersonal relationship since the availability of good hostel can make the students to react intellectual competence they need in forming a character that will lead to fulfillment of living experience. Student’s hostel plays the function of bringing out the best in students in their academic pursuit as it satisfies both the physical and psychological need of the students. These facilities go beyond shelter from the element of rain, dust and others but provide social aspect of interaction and socialization with friends, promoting togetherness and bring about sense of sharing.
The provision of good hostels environment and facilities has help student to attain their primary goals, this is because good hostels facilities influences positive academic excellence while bad hostel facilities serve as a constraint to academic performance. By far, the advantages of good hostels facilities usually outweigh the disadvantages .When adequate hostels facilities are made provision for by hostels administrators there will be punctuality to classes by the student as against having to come from outside school campus which might be featured by traffic congestion, traffic jam, traffic island and even road side block and thus fostering lateness to class. The peace and tranquility of providing conducive hostels environment is very important in any institution. The phenomenal growth in population has increased the interest in higher learning and thus the number of applicant every year has outweighed hostels accommodation and as a result becomes a problem. This is because inadequate infrastructure facilities lead to overcrowding thereby causing hostel pollution. There is a need for a renewed sourcing and researching of practicable approach towards hostels facilities for the enablement and efficient conducive academic driven environment.  It is important for hostels administration to provide hostels facilities such as reading room, kitchenette, and toilet, running water, canteen, pantry, electricity and a recreation area.
The need for a conducive and favorable hostel condition in the University of    Benin cannot be overemphasized due to the fact that student are expected to be in  sound state of mind in order for them to excel in their academic performance which can be achieve by good hostels facilities . The purpose of this study is therefore Students’ satisfaction with hostel accommodation in University of Benin.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Hostels provide cheap accommodation to students under the mandate of hostels administrators. These infrastructure facilities are needed by students for them to reach intellectual competence in forming character that will lead to fulfillment of experience. Such facilities include reading room, kitchenette, toilet, running water, canteen, pantry, electricity a recreation area. Provision of these facilities in good working conditions is not always readily available. It is either they are unavailable or in state of despair.
Also another problem that is occasioned by students is the fact that students admitted into the University tend to exceed the facilities that are available or make provision of by hostels administrators. This challenge is due to overcrowding which result from the increasing interest in higher institutions over the years. The existing students’ facilities increase in pressure because of its shortage dwelling  unit whereby as many as fifteen  (15) students share a space allocated to ten (10).
In addition, the problem of unsanitary environment leads to outbreak of diseases and social disorder, even poor and erratic supply of electricity coupled with shortage of water has also affect students. However, for more improved hostel facilities, the various problems needs to be tackled to achieve in their various areas of study. The study therefore is satisfaction of student’s hostel accommodation in University of Benin.
