ABSTRACT
Biologically, every living thing has a general property. One of these properties is movement. As a result of this movement, some hazard can occur. One of these hazards is accident. Generally, in Nigeria, the major mode of movement is by road. Road accident has become a major threat to lives of citizens of the country especially during the festive period. The increasing magnitude of fatal road traffic accident globally has been attributed to population explosion and increased level of motorization. Road traffic accident has intensified to severe health, social and economic perils in developing countries such as Nigeria. Hence, this research revealed the rate of road crashes in Nigeria by examining the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, the type of cases and the causes of road crashes in recent years (2011 to 2017). Result unveiled that Nigeria experienced the highest cases of road crashes in the year 2013. Likewise, the North Central is the geopolitical zone with consistent increase in road crash cases. In most of these accidents, serious cases are often seen. Cars, motorcycles and minibuses are on the higher side of the vehicle involved in road accidents. This might be due to their easy accessibility by both private and public users, hereby heading to the possible cause of over speeding leading to loss of control and dangerous driving in Nigeria. I therefore recommend that Government should enforce the use of speed limit devices to place check on the speed of drivers.
