ABSTRACT The aim of this study was,” To investigate on the Effects of substance abuse on student’s behaviors in selected secondary schools in Kaabong Town Council, Kaabong District, Karamoja Sub-Region, Uganda”. This study employed a descriptive survey research design. The target population of this study was 100 and it consisted of all the 2 selected secondary schools comprising of 06 guidance and counseling teachers, 44 students. Stratified random sampling was used to select schools and then simple random sampling method was used to select respondents from various strata. The sample size was 50 respondents which comprised of 6 guidance and counseling teachers and 44 students. Data collection tool for this study was the questionnaires. Pilot study was considered to assess the validity and reliability of the research instrument. The data was analyzed quantitatively guided by the study objectives. The researcher used statistical package for social sciences {SPSS] to analyze the data. Results were presented as per the research question. The study established that, students abused Alcohol, Cigarettes and Miraa to a large extent, teachers experienced students’ misbehaviors due to substance abuse in their school premises, students whose parents use substances and other drugs also learn the behavior and use substances too, and substance abusing students always disobey school rules and regulations. The study recommends that; the government should put in place measures of limiting easy access to substances; there is need for affirmative policy formulation to provide /encourage the use of student friendly disciplinary measures like guidance and counseling by professional teacher counselor. Secondary schools should have qualified guidance and counseling teachers to help students struggling with substances and also drugs, teachers training curriculum should be modified to incorporate school discipline studies particularly substance abuse and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology [MOEST] should expand its spheres of coverage to incorporate school principles in addressing the challenges faced in enhancing students’ discipline. Guidance and counseling should be emphasized when enhancing student discipline by sensitizing. More and more, teacher counselors should be trained in guidance and counseling. Democratically, elected student council should be empowered to coach other students on schools norms and values, hence strengthening peer counseling.
