ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine and analyze the emergence of cyber bulling in Nigeria and its effect on self-esteem among adolescence. The study was carried out among four senior secondary school students in Lagos metropolis. Specifically, Birch Freeman High School, Anglican Girl Senior Secondary School, Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School and Kliffon Senior Secondary School students in Lagos State. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed and gotten back after completion. Data were collected using The Cyber Bullying Prevalence Questionnaire (CBPQ) (Justin and Sammer, 2007), and Nigerian Self-esteem Scale (). The collected data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Regression Analysis and Independent T-test. In this research, the statistical finding indicated that there is a significant negative relationship between cyber bullying and self esteem of adolescent. Therefore, the hypothesis that stated that there is a significant negative relationship between cyber bullying and self esteem was accepted. This means that as adolescents experience cyber bullying by their peers, they experience a decrease in their level of self esteem. Furthermore, from the findings of this study, there was significant difference between male and female gender and cyber bullying revealing that male were more involved in cyber bullying than the female counterpart. It further showed that was significant difference among the age groups on cyber bullying with participants between ages 17 to 19 years scored the highest on cyber bullying. The result also revealed that there was significant difference among the average length of time on internet on cyber bullying because participants who reported surfing the internet above 5 hours scored higher on cyber bullying. This means that the hypothesis two that states that age, gender and time spent on the internet significantly affect cyber bullying was accepted. The findings were discussed using appropriate theories and reviews.
