ABSTRACT
The antibacterial activity of three types of medicated soap on Staphylococcus aureus isolated from wound infections was conducted. Fourteen individuals with wound infections were sampled. Swab sticks were used to collect specimens from wound infections; each swab stick was streaked separately over plates of nutrient and mannitol agar and subsequently incubated at 370c. Out of the fourteen (14) individuals sampled, 5(36%) were infected with Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (29%), Staphylococcus epidermis (21%), and least by Eschericha coli (14%). The study revealed that all the Staphylococcus aureus isolated were sensitive to the three medicated soaps. The mean inhibition zone diameters was highest in the medicated soap designated “D” with 22.5 mm followed by “S” medicated soap with 21.0mm and least with “T” medicated soap that had 20.0 mm. Also the Staphylococcus aureus isolated were sensitive to the commercial antibiotics used as controls. The result showed that medicated soaps were effective against Staphylococcus aureus involved in would infection in humans and are comparable to commercial antibiotics. Therefore medicated soap can be used in cleaning the skin particularly in the affected part of the skin during the time one has hurt or cut on the skin.
