ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to assess the factors influencing low contraceptive use among adolescents in the Kintampo north municipality. Cross-sectional study design was used for the study using a sample size of 100 adolescents in the municipality. A questionnaire was used for the data collection. Results of the study showed that, there was a high (79%) knowledge of contraceptives among respondents. Some health system factors that influenced the use of contraceptives among adolescents include fear of stigma, long waiting hours and long distance to health facilities and some socio-Cultural factors identified to have influence on the utilization of contraceptives include: religion, age, and family taboos.

In view of the findings we recommend that, Directors of Health services, Ministry of health and Ghana health Service should help: Provide more education to the general population about the use of contraceptives as well as benefits of contraceptives to help create awareness to adolescents, Make available health facilities, service providers and contraceptives for easy access to adolescents.
