ABSTRACT

This project work deals on the feasibility of transferring the Toe – To – Heel Air Injection (THAI) technology which is a new in-situ combustion method of heavy oil recovery from Alberta, Canada, where the technology has recorded success with high rate of recovery to South-West, Nigeria (Ondo state) for efficient heavy oil recovery. In this work, the textural, reservoir, physical and chemical properties of oil sand in Nigeria were compared with that in Canada where the technology has been applied. The properties were analyzed using the “correlative approach” which differentiates and also shows the similarities between the oil sands in the two countries. With the correlative analysis, deductions made based on the objective or purpose of study shows that the properties of oil sand in SouthWest, Nigeria compares favorably with the oil sands in Alberta, Canada, thus, Toe – To – Heel Air Injection (THAI) technology can be suitably applied in Nigeria for heavy oil recovery. The THAI technology of heavy oil recovery should be adopted in Nigeria since it is more economical with high recovery rate to compare to other insitu combustion methods.
