Abstract
This project is a research work which set out to assess students’ performances in mathematics in some selected secondary schools in Sokoto North local government area of Sokoto State from 2013 to 2018. In order to achieve this, two main objectives were pursued - to ascertain students performances in mathematics in some selected secondary schools in Sokoto North local government area between 2013 to 2018 and also to ascertain the factors that determines students performance in mathematics using a descriptive research design and questionnaire as instrument of data collection while adopting purposive non probability sampling technique. Data obtained was analyzed, organized and tabulated statistically using simple percentage ratio and interpreted upon. It was discovered at the course of the research that students’ performances in mathematics from 2013 to 2018 have been consistently poor and factors such as demographic factors, students’ arithmetic ability, motivation and concentration, curriculum, and school context and facilities are determinants of students’ performances in mathematics. Going by the discovery, we recommended that Federal, State, Local governments and Private schools should have Mathematics laboratory, improve teachers pay, welfare and encourage in - service training, parents should encourage their wards to put in more effort in studying mathematics, curriculum development should be left in the hands of expert and good governance should be promoted in order to reduce poverty which has made some parents not to provide necessary mathematics materials for their children.
