Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of computer-aided instruction on the academic achievement of students in commerce in senior secondary schools in Delta State. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design. Six research questions were used, so as to help find a good instructional method that will help to improve students academic performance in commerce. An instrument titled Commerce Achievement Test (CAT) with 50 structured instruments was used for data collection. The target population comprised 1368, made up of 715 male students and 653 female students offering commerce in SSII. The research instrument was subjected to face validation by three experts from the Department of Vocational Teacher Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba and Asagba Mixed Secondary School Asaba. The reliability coefficient of the instrument for the study was 0.99 which was calculated using Kunder-Richardson reliability test. The research questions were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Students taught with computer aided instruction experimental group achieved higher grade than the students taught with the conventional lecture method control group. CAI is a gender friendly instructional approach. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the use of CAI in teaching and learning is instructionally effective. It was recommended that CAI should be adopted by the commerce teachers and curriculum planners for effective instructional delivery and outcome.
