ABSTRACT

The research was about the secondary school strikes and students educational achievements of Changamwe division, Changamwe district Mombasa-Kenya. The study took place in Miritini, St. Lwanga, Changamwe, and Kajembe secondary schools. The scheduled time was three months. This was from June to August. The objectives of the study were; to examine the causes of strikes in selected schools of Changamwe division, to find out the effect of strikes in academic achievements of secondary school students in selected schools of changamwe division, and to establish the remedies of strike in selected secondary school of changamwe division. The researcher employed a random sampling technique to select the samples and a total of one hundred respondents were used which represent the rest of the respondents. The participants were students, teachers, parents and political leaders. These were male and female age between fourteen to fifty and above. Data collected was based on the objective of the study. On the causes of strikes in selected secondary schools in changamwe division, the study findings revealed that; drug abuse with 59%, poor-teachers-students relation with 21 %, expulsion of students with 4%, poor feeding with 6% and corporal punishments with 10% On the Impact of strike on educational achievements in selected secondary school in Changamwe division the study finding revealed that; decline in of the quality education, with 21 % closure of school with 15%, decline in class achievements with 43%, decline in class participation with 5% and high depression and stress with 16%. On the solution to school strike in selected schools in Changamwe division, the finding revealed that; Avoid corporal punishment with 11 %, Avoid students expulsion with 19%, Improve feeding with 7%, emphasize teacher ethics with 13%, Improve teachers students relationship with 50%. Conclusions were made in which the research concluded that strikes have been disastrous on both the students and the school administration as a dramatic decline in students' achievements has been witnessed. Recommendations given include; scraping of corporal punishments, arresting of student who leads the strike, improved feeding of students, government enacting laws on strike among others.
