ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to find out whether there was a relationship between students attitude and their performance in "O" level history in N sangi Sub-county, W akiso District. Not all candidates who offered history in selected schools were made to be subjects of the study, since history is a compulsory subject in all the 4 schools only 50 students were used for a sample, 37 of whom were females and 13 were males. It was hoped that the results of the study would lead to : I. Contribute on how best to improve the academic performance of history. 2. To improve on the teaching- learning environment of history. 3. To stimulate other scholars to carryout further research in history and other related subjects. The study was guided by 3 hypotheses i.e i) There is a relationship between students attitude towards history and their performance ii) Students' sex is related to their attitude. iii) There is a relationship between students' sex and their performance in "O" level history. The data collected revealed that: I. The students attitude and their performance was related 2. The students sex and their attitude was related 3. The students' sex and their performance were related though with negligibi!~ariance. / From the study seen above the following recommendations were made. I. Teachers should help students to develop good attitude towards history 2. The Ministry of Education should make sure that the policies g¥ered towards vocationalisation of education do not underestimate some subjects. 3. The Uganda National Examinations Board should not be much tight on minor areas of historical invents since it has a strong influence on what is taught Generally, since this was an exploratory study, it can not be regarded as conclusive. Therefore there is need for further research beyond this one in order to come up with a clear picture of the subject under study
