Abstract

This study focused on the evaluation of teachers input and academic performance of students in geography in Onitsha Educational Zone. A descriptive survey method was adopted for this study. A structured questionnaire made up of 20 items was designed and administered to 200 respondents, twenty (20) each for the ten (10) selected schools. The data collected from the study were analyzed using the mean scores and standard deviation from the result of the study. The study revealed that teachers input to an extent influence the academic performance of students in Geography. It was found that geography teachers’ experiences in this field of study greatly add to the skills in teaching. It was also discovered that Geography teachers who master the material passes concept more clearly and provide better explanations than those with weaker backgrounds. It was also evident that geography teachers’ ethical conduct in classroom affects the performance of students in geography. The study showed that an inspired and informed geography teacher is the most important factor influencing students’ achievement, so proper support from both new and experienced educators are needed. However, the researcher proffered some recommendations that frequent seminars, workshops and in-service training should be organized for geography teachers. Parents should encourage, their wards by providing them with recommended geography textbooks. The government should make efforts to improve students’ academic work by providing libraries and laboratories for geography practical to be carried out. Conclusions were drawn as well as suggestions for further studies.
