Abstract

This study examined the effect of drug abuse on job performance in a manufacturing industry. Alcohol and Drug abuse at the workplace poses a great challenge to the growth and development of any organization. Presently, about 200 million people or 5 per cent of the world’s population aged 15 to 64 use drugs. In Nigeria it is observed that a large percentage of youths abuse drugs. This study used Beloxxi industrial limited as a case study. The objectives of this study were to determine the extent to which substance abuse influence workplace absenteeism among employees, to establish the impact of substance abuse on workplace accidents among employees, to examine the influence of substance abuse on the level of productivity among employees. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A stratified random sample of 200 employees was used in this analysis. Primary data were collected using a questionnaire. Quantitative analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of a computer program - Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The hypothesis was tested with correlation, we then reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternate hypothesis, which states that there is a significant relationship between drug abuse and job performance in Beloxxi industrial limited. From the findings of this study, it is concluded that alcohol and drug abuse impact negatively on the employees in terms of direct and indirect costs. In view of this, the study recommends that there is need for the manufacturing industries in liaison with stakeholders to institute stringent policy mechanisms and capacity development programs to curb alcohol and drug abuse among employees in manufacturing industries.
