INTRODUCTION
1.1General Introduction
This study discusses the phonology of Bànsárà language, a language spoken in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross-River state, Nigeria.
Phonology is that branch of linguistics that studies the organization of speech sounds in human language. It is the component of grammar that accounts for the general pattern or structure of sounds, and the way sounds relate to one another in normal speech.
In human language, sounds (consonants, vowels and suprasegments) enter into different relationships that produce meaning. For instance, some combinations of sounds are acceptable and meaningful while some are regarded as anomalous and meaningless. The various meaning combinations and the way they affect pronunciation are the main focus of phonology, Basic Linguistics (2011:38).
This introductory chapter will discuss some facts on the speakers of the Bànsárà language, majorly looking into their historical background, sociocultural profile, genetic classification, scope and organization of study and brief review of the chosen framework.
