ABSTRACT

Record engenders competence in management and maintains the trend in the history of learning and improvement processes. NEMA has been talking disaster related issues through the establishment of concrete structures and measure such as the education or the public in order to raise their level of awareness and reduce the effect of disasters in the country. The local government are the first responders, then the state and finally federal. The system of record keeping is also important in the management of future disaster. Therefore, using daily trust newspaper as a source of data, the records of NEMA intervention to disaster management in Nigeria was attained. Saturday trust (daily trust newspaper) was used for 52 weeks. The findings obtained is that the most frequent disasters in Nigeria that are intervened by NEMA are, flood (71.3%), terrorist attack (34.6%), building collapse (3.8%), oil spill (3.8%), while drought, bomb blast & rainstorm is (1.9%). The region of the country where it occurs most frequently is the north-west (30.8%), north-central (28.8%), north east (9.2%). While the south-east, south-south and south-west have a frequency of 11.5% being the lowest. The relief materials supplied from the highest frequency to the lowest are; food item (11.5%), blanket, mats & mattresses (7.7%), drugs/Medicare (3.8%), insecticide, detergent, cloths/shoes, bucket & rubbers have a frequency of (1.9%) each. The lowest relief material is building material. Introduction of better flood warning systems, and modify homes, businesses, schools, and general infrastructures to withstand flood. More majors should be taken to ensure that regions have a better disaster management system in place. The relief materials should be provided or made ready especially building materials, for internally displaced persons to erect structures.
