ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of motivation on the job performance of teachers in the Suame Sub-metro of the Ghana Education Service in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The objectives of the study were to identify the motivational packages for Junior High School teachers in the Suame sub-metro, find the factors that motivate Junior High School teachers and to assess the perceived impact of motivation on Junior High School teachers’ performance. The study used the qualitative approach to collect data and also analyzed the data using qualitative method of analysis. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 30 respondents which included teachers, parents, headteachers and education officers in the Suame sub-metro. Structured and unstructured interview were the main instruments used in data collection. Data was analyzed using qualitative techniques such as transcription and content analysis. From the data collected and analysis conducted, the study found among others that motivation has direct impact on the performance of teachers. It also emerged that motivation in the long run reduces negative attitudes like absenteeism and negligence of duty. Based on the findings the study recommends that school heads should be encouraged to find diverse ways of motivating their teachers to make the teaching profession very attractive.
