ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of training on employee performance in selected Senior High Schools in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The objectives of the study were to find out the existence of on-the-job training for teachers in Senior High Schools, find out the effect of training on teachers’ performance in Senior High Schools and to establish the factors that affect effective employee performance. A descriptive survey design with closed ended questionnaire was used for the study. The targeted population was all the headmasters, assistant headmasters and teachers of the, four public senior high schools in the Atwima Nwabiagya District. Simple random sampling was used to select 50% of the study population of 292 from Nkawie Senior Technical High School and Toase Senior High School for the study. The study found among others that teachers in the study area have had some form of training since they joined the teaching profession. Increased moral of teachers, improved right use of teaching and learning materials are some of the effects of teachers’ professional training. Unhealthy management-staff relation and unfavorable working condition are some of the factors that affect effective employee performance. Based on the findings, the study recommends that reward systems should be improved for workers or employees in the Ghana Education Service to increase their moral to have the zeal to work diligently.
