ABSTRACT

The study investigated supervisory practices of heads of senior high schools at Savelugu Municipal in the northern region of Ghana. The purpose of the study was to find out supervisory practices of the heads. The study focused on areas such as personal support, workshops, in-service training and engagement in school practices, provision of assistance in teaching, problems in supervision and factors to improve supervision. Descriptive survey was used in the study. Mixed-method approach was employed. The population involved heads and teachers. A sample of 56 respondents was used for the study. The census technique was used to select all the heads. The teachers were selected through the use of simple random technique. The main instruments used to collect data were one set of questionnaire and interview guide. The questionnaire was pre-tested and the reliability co-efficient obtained was.82. Three research questions were formulated to guide and direct the study. Frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data obtained. Findings revealed that funds to conduct supervision in the school were woefully inadequate. The organization of workshops and in-service training were not frequently done. Teachers’ interest was not stimulated during teaching. It is therefore recommended that the Regional Director of Education in collaboration with other stakeholders in education should organize regular workshops and inservice training for heads of senior high schools to equip them with the necessary skills for school supervision. Supervisors need to stimulate teachers’ interest by encouraging them to initiate ways to solve minor issues.
