A CASE STUDY OF NIGERIAN NATIONAL PETROLEUM CORPORATION (NNPC) ENUGU.
ABSTRACT

This write up is aimed at identifying the employment opportunities for secretaries in parastatals in Enugu urban. To achieve this other Minot objectives were equally pursued. These include identifying the employment opportunities available and the problems associated with them. To cover the trend of events on the scene, a review of related literature gathering data, structured and closed – ended questionnaire was designed, validated, reproduced and administered on a sample of 40 secretaries of Nigerian national petroleum corporation. These were duly completed and retrieved. Data derived thereof were presented in tables and analyzed by the use of weighted mean and rank order method. The major findings of the study showed that there is demand for the services of secretaries in parastatals in Enugu urban.
In addition, computer helps to improve work of secretaries. The researcher recommend that parents, teachers, and other interested people should do secretarial studies as a course secretarial should go into the training computer.
Qualified secretaries should seek employment in any parastatals in Enugu urban.

INTRODUCTION
1.1    Background of the study
For many years, the idea of stenography now typewriting came into focus, they two terms that have gained ground as need for secretaries in the office increased and the need for efficiency in the way, office matters and procedures were carried out.
The growth and development of technology has favoured in no small measure the stenographer’s and typist who learnt the skill of typewriting and shorthand among other subjects.
In Nigeria, stenography and typewriting was regarded as commercial education, came with the arrival of missionaries and colonial business enterprise.  They wanted the people who can type their correspondence and mail them.  And immediately people that are trained in the commercial subject were employed.
In the `1960’s, the school began to boom, private individual began to invest in th4em.  Ukeje (1979) remarked that one  of the  things that did not favors the expansion of vocational education in the  country is the experience that Nigeria had over the past fifteen or more years on employment opportunities as they occurred for people with different types of education.  For the past decade people have viewed education form utilization angle.  Although commercial education offered such as wonderful prospects as pointed out by (Ukeje 1979) and many other people continued to neglect the profession and say all word of thins against it.
Then the question of where these jobs exist which was bound to be answered, becomes important and prompted this study.  Again do they exist, what are the qualifications for them?  Moreover, have these assertions been over taken by time and circumstance?
To answer these questions in Nigerian, a lot of factors are to be considered, one of such factors had been an idea, which seems to be generally held, and which is that some business administration cannot distinguish between functions of secretaries and that of the clerical officers/typist.  17 assumed that some business administrators assign the position and function to them arbitrarily and what they do is wrong.
Another point is that demand and supply curve in relation to sentences employment  has not reaches an equilibrium and thus has generated concern among the producer and consumers alike.  The school which supplied of the  group of workers needed to have its record of  enrollments assets.  Only the polytechnics and few universities offer this course.
Presently, many people are learning to type on their won and it seems they are going to constitute some threats to the secretaries employment opportunities, people can to their functions to a little extent without experiencing their professional training, then, something must be done.
Again, it will be important to fine only how far government   have been involved in the affairs of secretaries.
It is important to emphasize have that another problem which is faced by the  secretaries will be the improvement on his/her professional qualifications.
Secretaries should abide by the following qualities and characteristics.
(1)    Discretion and loyalty
(2)    Tact and conveys
(3)    Orderliness
(4)    Punctuality and common sense
(5)    Ability to take responsibilities
(6)    A high personal; standard.

1.2    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLESM.
In Nigeria, secretaries faces a lot of problems and these constitute hindrances to the employment opportunities for them.  Some people believe that the secretaries are mainly servants without knowing that their  duties are important to the development s of any organization.
Therefore the problems in their research work is to find out if.  
(1)    The typists work are confused with that of the secretaries.
(2)    The introduction of computer have taken are secretaries wok.
(3)    Information and technology have taken over shorthand.
(4)    Relationship between bosses and secretaries greater problem to employment opportunities for secretaries.
1.3    PURPOSE OF THE STUDY.
The purpose of this study is to examine the employment opportunities for secretaries in parastatals specifically, the study will
(1)    determine whether the week of typist is conducive with secretaries.
(2)    Find out of the introduction of computers has taken over the secretary’s work.
(3)    Determine if the information and technology have taken over
(4)     Shorthand.
(5)    Ascertain if the relation between bosses and secretaries’ cereates problem to employment opportunities for secretaries
1.4    SCOPE OF STUDY
This study covered the employment opportunities for secretaries in Nigerian National Petroleum co-operation (NNPC) Enugu.
1.5    RESEARCH QUESTION
1.6    In order to carry out a reliable and effective research study on this topic the following questionare advances for the study.
(1)    To what extent is typist’s work confused with that to the secretaries?
(2)    To what extent has the introduction of the computers taken over the secretary’s work?
(3)    To what extent have information and technology taken over shorthand?
(4)    To what extent has the relationship between bosses and secretaries create problems for employment opportunities to secretaties?
1.7    SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
This study is expected to crate awareness to people the meaning of secretary’s duties//roles and importance of secretaries in the parastatals in Enugu urban, also to let people know that the secretaries are very important persons and they help in the growth and development of business organization.
Moreover their duties are not only taking, recording of information but they are second in command in the business organization.  Also there are available employment opportunities for them in the entire Nigeria National Petroleum Co-operation Enugu.
Also this study tends to inform the public that the secretaries are not  servant as they thin, but instead they are assisting the boss in any establishment and there are employment opportunities for them.
It will also inform other aspirates that the training of secretaries are still open of the interested people an there is publication of employment prospects for the secretaries in the parastatals.   And the employment opportunities of secretaries haven’t reached to equilibrium.
However, this study will also influence other in tested groups including parents towards, utilizing the opportunities offered by commercial education and encourage their children towards the knowledge and importance of secretaries education and their opportunities of getting employment.  Also this will inspire them to continue to taken the advantages of employment opportunities over time to time.
