ABSTRACT

The coordinated attacks on September 11,2001 on the United States of America masterminded by Osama Bin Laden, made the word terrorism become a ‘global household’ name throughout the world. In the past, terrorism was said to have evolved as a direct consequence of the United States and Russia (former Soviet Union) foreign policies towards the world. Now the concept of domestic terrorism which has a long history in developing countries as emerged to become a cliché. Hence, various governmental systems at different times have been faced with the challenge of bringing an end to this menace. This paper attempts to examine the effects globalization as had on terrorism in Nigeria, and also examines the link between both phenomenons, most especially considering the fact that the recently concluded National Constitutional Conference in 2014 highlighted this prominent area as an issue to be discussed. Therefore this paper employs the theoretical frameworks of Realism, Frustration-aggression, Liberalism and the theory of global culture in laying a solid foundation to explain the discussions engaged in by the committee on National security of the national conference. The crippling effect executed by the notorious insurgent terrorist group; Boko-Haram was also used to succinctly explain terrorism in Nigeria. The paper made full use of the report of the Committee on National security of the National conference and other secondary materials including Newspapers to beam its search light on some of the emerging themes of the conference, some of which include; establishment of state police, strenghning of security forces on coastal areas among others. The paper concludes by giving suitable recommendations to help in bringing an end to this great evil..
