ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was meant to investigate counselors’ perception on the cause of divorce and its impact on adolescents in secondary schools in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. Descriptive Survey design was used for this study. The design entails the collection and use of data through questionnaire systematically from a given population to describe certain characteristic features of the population. The target population of the study comprised the students in the selected secondary schools in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. One hundred (100) JSS students were randomly selected with the use of stratified and simple random sampling techniques from ten of the secondary schools in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State. A self- designed instrument was used for the study. Statistical tools and simple percentage were used to analyse the research work. Based on the findings, it was revealed that parents fight on any matter can lead to divorce. Also, spending nights away from each other after fights can cause divorce among parents. The study ascertained that sharing separate rooms is another cause of divorce. It was also revealed that divorce happened when parents spend long hours at work and don't have personal discussion but only business talks as parents, It was revealed that failure of parents to care for the provision of school materials has a great impact on the academic performance of the students. It could be concluded that the academic performance of students is greatly affected due to divorce of their parents. It was recommended that Secondary schools should have guidance services with competent counsellors to counsel students from broken homes, child raised by single parent and parents who do not pay adequate attention to their children and wards’ education and those students experiencing challenges in schools. There is need for group counselling and individual counselling in schools where students with challenged homes are counselled. And students should develop positive self-concept in life to assist them in their academic achievement. Parents should be enlightened on the need to stay together as husband and wife to raise a good family. They should persevere and tolerate each other in marriage. Also, the school counselling should not only be concerned with the students personal and academic problems, parents should be given guidance and counselling services to intimate them with the consequences of their steps and action on the performances of their child in school.
