 CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Breast feeding is widely termed as baby friendly. This is made obvious with the recent attention and campaign given to breast feeding by the National and international Government and Non-Governmental Organization, physicians and Nutritionists have turned to town criers overnight in the course of letting others be aware of how best to feed babies through exclusive breastfeeding. A huge amount is being invested on the programmed by international Organizations like United Nations Development Programmed (UNDP), United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF), and World Health Organization (WHO) and so on.

To the populace, breast feeding is the ‘NATURAL’ way of feeding infants and not because they understand that it does a lot of good to the child and the mother.

However, it is for the immunity of the baby that also laid the foundation for psychological development. The breast milk is generally acceptable to have a temporary immunity on the child. The first milk that is secreted for the first few days after births is called “colostrum”. The Colostrum’s act as antibodies, which fights impending diseases or bacteria and virus alike because it is so rich in vitamins and amino acids.

In developing countries, the child has fair chances of survival if he continues to receive breast milk throughout most of the second year of his life, however, one that is not breast fed, is likely to die from infections, diarrhea and marasmus according to information published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1996.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Study has shown that infant mortality rate has been found to be rampant among children who were not well breast fed in their first two years of life.

Available statistics from WHO indicates that 70% of infant mortality rate that was recorded worldwide annually, of this figure, Africa is the highest with 40% of total figure. It is on this note that a research was decided upon to find out how the health institution in Nigeria fair in issues related to infant mortality and development as may be affected by breast feeding using Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

Inadequate feeding results in serious disease conditions like marasmus, kwashiorkor and other dietary or related problem, thus the need for a naturally prepared formula that is “breast milk”. Apart from man-made, infant formulas are examined in order to identify a better psychological development of the baby.
