Abstract
Family planning is an important strategy in promoting maternal and child health. It improves health through adequate spacing of birth, avoiding pregnancy at high-risk maternal age and high parity. It is often used as a synonym for birth control, however. It does have a wider view, dealing with birth control, reproductive health, as well as premarital and pre conception counseling. Contraceptive use is still low in many developing countries, including Nigeria, where 23.7% of currently married women had ever used. In view of this background, this study analyzes the knowledge, attitude and practice of family planning among rural women in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. To address the problem of study, three research questions were raised. The researcher adopted a survey research design). A total of one hundred and forty-four (144) respondents comprised the target of the study. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), frequency tables and percentages (%) were employed in the data analysis. It was discovered that although the awareness of family planning services among community members could be high, it does not necessarily increase the uptake of family planning services if community members are not well informed about the benefits of family planning. It is therefore essential to organize educational campaigns on the awareness of family planning services by emphasizing on the benefits of the services as it will help reduce misconceptions, and increase access and utilization of family planning services. Males should also be educated on the benefits of family planning services so as to reduce opposition from husbands. Furthermore, if women have the desire to space their children as well as prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, they are more likely to use the service.
