ABSTRACT

This project investigates the effect of domestic waste disposal among adults in Oke-Sopen Community, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State. The study adopts a descriptive survey method. The research instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents to gather adequate information. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage. Findings revealed that all adults in Oke-Sopen Community throw garbage on the streets and in the drains and gullies, dump their waste in gutter most especially rainy time for rain to wash it away for them. Refuse materials were dumped into drainage channels by adults of Oke-Sopen community, Ijebu-Igbo. This usually results in flooding. It  has  been  widely  accepted  that  open  burning  method  has  tendency  to  create  environmental pollution. Sometimes refuse could be confined to barrel or incinerator, once the burning device does not contain emission control device or lid it is agreed to be open burning. Also, smokes are often released into the air can cause fog, acidulated precipitations, acid  rain, depletion of Ozone  layer on account of  the  release of aerosol  to  the atmosphere. The study concluded that the method of waste management adopted in the study area does not conform to sustainable waste management strategy which results in environmental degradation and health risks. This implies that much attention has not been given to domestic waste management in the study area. The study among others recommends that the first thing that needs urgent attention is in the area of public enlightenment and environmental and health education. More  attention  should  be  given  to  waste  disposal  management  through  adequate funding by providing residential neighbourhoods with properly designed waste disposal points in order  to protect the environment from pollution.
