ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of school basedmanagement committee in the development of secondary education in FederalCapital Territory. In order to realize the objectives of the study which is toassess the most important challenges and difficulties the principals encounteredin the process of decision making within the School Based ManagementCommittee (SBMC), literature were reviewed and data were sourced both fromprimary and secondary source. The sample size for the study is 100 teachersfrom five schools selected for this study. To achieve this purpose of thisresearch questionnaire, subsequently, the data obtained were collated andpresented using frequency and simple percentages for background information;frequency and mean scores were used for research questions. The major findingfrom the research was that schools did not adopt adequate planning and centraladministration support in executing their duties and roles, also Inadequatesensitization and advocacy for the communities to understand the enormousbenefits to be derived from their genuine participation in school governance.Based on this finding, the study recommends that the government and othereducation stakeholders should work on retraining members of SMTs on sevenmajor skills which are needed to drive the nation’s education forward. Theseare Policy Implementation Skills; Fund Raising Skills, Technical Skills, HumanRelations Skills, Curriculum Implementation Skills, Effective CommunicationSkills and ICT Skills among other recommendations
