Abstract
This research examines school record keeping in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The objectives of the study were to find out the type of school records, the level of adequacy of record facilities for school record keeping in public secondary schools, the adequacy of personnel for school record keeping, the training opportunities for school records keeping provided for staff in public secondary schools, and the security strategies for protecting school records against theft and environmental hazards in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Consequently, 286 questionnaires were distributed to the principals and teachers in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, of which 255 questionnaires were returned. The study employed descriptive statistics, mean and standard deviation to analyze the data obtained. It was found that there are school records in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government area. However, there is a lack of computerized record facilities, lack of trained record keeping personnel and training opportunities. The study also found out that there are no adequate security strategies in protecting school records from theft and damage in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The study recommends that funds provided for school record keeping should be kept for its use, school records personnel should be given chance for professional course through in-service training. There is also a need for proper measures in securing school records from theft and environmental damage.
