This study examines political violence in Ibadan and how well the Police was able to curb it during the period from 1960-1983. Politics in Ibadan was critically examines and the various crises that led to the annulment of the First Republic was also looked at too.


Aim and Objectives of the study

The aim of this study is to embark and discover new findings that will contribute to the body of knowledge because the issue of political violence of this present age brings about the need to consider   political   violence   issues   relating   to   Nigerian   Police.   The   objectives   of   this   study include;

  • To put in historical perspective the nature of political violence.
  • To discuss political violence in Nigeria.
  • To examine party politics in Ibadan
  • To critically assess the role the Police have played in political violence in Ibadan.


Scope for the study

As this study implies, its spatial scope covers Ibadan and it will cover the period 1960-1983. The period 1960 is chosen because this was when the Nigerian Police was established as a unified federal force, the study terminates  in 1983 when the second republic was terminated by the military through a coup.
