ABSTRACT

A study was conducted in order to evaluate the effects of Faldherbia albida stem bark extract (FASB) contained in liposome gel at different concentration and silver sulfadiazine (SSD) cream on healing process of burn wounds in Wistar albino rats. Thirty five adult Wistar-albino rats were divided into five (5) groups of seven (7) rats each. A burn was generated on the backs of all the rats, done by subjecting to full thickness second degree skin burns with 5cm surface area diameter by brass probes. The burnt areas in all the groups were covered daily with Faldherbia albida stem bark extract (FASB), at different concentrations; base cream, 5%, 10%, 20%, and the silver sulfadiazine (SSD) cream, respectively. Reduction in wound size was determined after seven, fourteen, and twenty-one days intervals. The wound size was significantly smaller in the liposome gel containing an higher concentration of Faldherbia albida stem bark extract as compared with other groups. The results from the study showed that the ointment at different concentration most especially at higher concentrations is more effective in healing burn related skin wounds in rat model. Faldherbia albida contains tannis and has been reported  that tannis behave like potassium permanganate on fresh wound. In the process of these evaluation, two controls where used in the study, a positive control – Silver sulfadiazine cream and a negative control – the base cream.
