ABSTRACT
The study investigated the Pupils perception towards teachers use of instructional materials inteaching and learning of social studies in primary school, Asaba Urban Area of Delta State. Thestudy adopted descriptive research design. The interested relationship between the use ofinstructional materials and positive perception of the pupils in learning social studies, teachersperception of male and female pupils in the use of instructional materials in learning socialstudies and availability of instructional materials between various school in Asaba urban inrelation to the teaching of social studies were investigated. Thus, three research questions guidedthe conduct of this study. The population of the study comprised all primary offering socialstudies public primary schools in Asaba urban in the area of the study. The simple randomsampling techniques to select 15 pupils as sample and sampling techniques from eight (8)selected public schools for the study, A 15-item questionnaire on4-point scale was used to elicitresponses from pupils/teachers. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statisticaltechniques involving mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study shows that wasrelationship between the use of instructional materials and positive perception of pupils inlearning social studies; differences in the teachers’ perception of male and female pupils in theuse of instructional materials in learning social studies and availability of instructional materialsbetween various schools in Asaba urban in relation to the teaching of social studies. Based on thefindings of the study, it was recommended that Instructional materials should always be madeavailable by schools or improvised by teachers through the would make learning interestingwhich in turn leads to positive attitude of Teachers in the subject, Instructional materials whichinterest both boys and girls should be made available as this would lead to both parties to beinterested in the class and as such leads to positive attitude, Adequate teaching materials shouldbe provided by both government and non-governmental organization to all schools in Asabaurban and at the same quantity and quality. This would end the differences of availability ofinstructional materials in different schools
