ABSTRACT
A study was undertaken to determine typical concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi (microflora) in Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in the tropical rainforest environment of Nigeria. Aerial sampling was conducted at various faculties and departments each day. The air samples were collected thrice daily. Concentrations of airborne microflora exceeded available local guidelines for classroom, lobby, library and offices, but not in the restricted places. The occupant density was the key factor influencing the levels of airborne microflora, depending on the particular location within the school. The concentrations of airborne bacteria and fungi in the four different school units varied from department to department. The bacterial population ranges from 3.0cfu/m3 to 70.0cfu/m3, with the highest bacterial population recorded in the classroom. The fungal population ranges from 6.0cfu/m3 to 44.7cfu/m3, while the highest fungal population was recorded in the classroom and officeses. The microflora of the human body (skin, gastrointestinal tracts, respiratory tract) and the opportunistic pathogens where all isolated. The Escherichia coli and Bacillus, and the fungal Isolates included, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Mucor, and Candida spp. are the concentration of airborne microflora recorded in the school environment, specifically in the classroom was significantly different from other places.
