The SME sector is strategically positioned to absorb up to 80% of jobs, improve per capita income, increase value addition to raw materials supply, improve export earnings and step up capacity utilisation in key industries. The sector is structured across other key sectors, including Agriculture, Mining and Quarrying, Building and Construction, Manufacturing, Solid Minerals, etc, and thus has strong linkages with the entire range of economic activities in the country. Thus, any situation that may lead to consideration variation this structural setting needs to be assessed.

It is therefore on the above premise that this study was conceived as a concerted response to assess the effects of building a credible and reliable synergy between Micro financing and small and medium enterprises development in Nigeria, required to strategically reposition the sector. The dearth and paucity of credible and reliable financing source is one of the main constraints to the development of the SME Sector in Nigeria. Due to the absence of a robust SME sector, the economy and other principal stakeholders could not proactively evolve sustainable intervention strategies toward repositioning and creating efficient and sustainable SME sector in Nigeria.

1.1              Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to determine the Impact of Microfinance on the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises in Kano metropolis. Thus, the study intends to achieve the following specific objectives of the study:

(i)                 To determine the impact of Micro financing on revenue growth of small and medium enterprises in Kano metropolis.

(ii)               To assess the effect of Micro financing on the level of productivity of small and medium enterprises in Kano metropolis.

(iii)             To assess the influence of Micro financing on retained earnings of small and medium enterprises in Kano metropolis.
