ABSTRACT
The phenomenon of drug experimentation is presently at alarming rate as reflected in maladjusted behavior been exhibited by some adolescents in some secondary schools in Nigeria. Therefore, this study investigated on Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy as an intervention for experimenting with drugs among adolescents in Oyo East Local Government.
The study adopted descriptive survey research design while simple random sampling procedure was employed to select eighty participants within Oyo East Local Government. For data collection, a structured questionnaire was used on each variable examined. For research questions and hypothesis were generated and tested accordingly. The data was analysed at 0.05 level is significance, using Chi-square analysis technique.
The findings revealed that there was no significant differences in the way of abusing prescribed and non prescribed drug among adolescents (x² cal = 16.37, x² tab = 21.03). There was significant peer influence on the use and abuse of drugs (x² cal = 24.54, x² tab = 21.03). There was significant parental influence on the use and abuse of drugs among adolescents (x² cal =28.14, x² tab = 21.03). Also, there was significant effect on the use and abuse of drugs among adolescents (x² cal = 64.1, x² tab = 21.03). The results showed that peer and parental influence to a large extent contribute to adolescents involvement in drug use and abuse and also there are several effects which may be either short or long term on those who experiment with drugs.
Based on this, the psychological intervention of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy gives three approaches to the treatment of drug abuse. This include Self training, Brief motivational Interviewing and Community reinforcement approach. Also, governmental and non-governmental agencies, counsellors, researchers and policy maker have to assist in combating the issue of drug experimentation among students in various institution at all level.
