ABSTRACT
Rising cost of foodstuffs affect the welfare of majority of Nigerians who live below the poverty line of one dollar per day. The study examined the relative changes in prices of staple foods in Imo State. The study collected secondary data from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the yearly prices and quantities of staple foods in Imo State over a period of seven (7) years (2006-2012) .The Fisher’s Ideal Index was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that prices of staple foods in Imo State increased persistently leading to a high cost of living and a falling standard of living. The study identified the causes of rising cost of transportation, lack of adequate storage facilities, and renting of business premises etc. Appropriate actions aimed at increasing food output and preservation was recommended.
