A STUDY ON THE BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IN NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
(A CASE STUDY OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, EKIADOLOR)
 ABSTRACT

This research was carried out to investigate the major barriers to effective communication in Nigeria educational system. A survey method was used for this study. Questionnaires method was also used to collect data from the respondents for this study, in carrying out this study, the relevant literature were reviewed the population of this study consists of the entire students while the sample is 100. Simple random sampling method was used to collect data from the respondents. Simple percentage method was also used others that the non availability of modern office equipment can delay the processing of information, physical, and psychological state of mind of an individual is a yardstick to effective communication. It recommended among others that more equipment should be provide to supplement that already existing ones, and a more effective combination of all the system of communication should be adopted to reduce communication problems.

INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
          In Nigeria today, there exist several higher institutions of learning, in order to create a good image for these institutions information has to be effectively and efficiently disseminated. This process of exchanging information is known as communication.
          For any society to function well the people should be able to transmit knowledge intentions, feelings, business from one person to another effective communication brings about oneness and efficiency within such constituted groups, giving instructions complaint and keeping members abreast with new policies, motivation, training and development depend completely on the superiors ability to communicate. It is through communication that management can get things done it seeks to unite and coordinate all aspect of the institution.
          According to Idogho (2001) communication contains these elements the sender or source, the message and the destination or receiver communication breakdown can arise in any of the three elements. The sender must have enough information and be able to present it in any way that the receiver ia able to understand by using a reliable channel.
          Communication breakdown occurs when the response of the receiver us quite different from the intention of the sender society demands determine what people hear or see. They tend to select information that conflict their views that conflict with their views that causes to ineffective communication are numerous and rampant in higher institutions of learning, hence this research work will find out which impediment is more prevailing in higher institution between students.
          Communications enhances free flow of information and inter departmental relations in the institution, communication also promotes speedy distributions and delivery of goods to student, it provides the link between the teachers and the seller.
          Communication helps the student to be aware of what is happening and for their various activities to be harmonized.
          According to Amadin (2004) is the act of passing information from one person to another. It involves the use of speech, post telephone, intercom, and massager’s service or other means.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
          Many problems encountered in our personal lives or in any given institution arise from poor communication. When massagers are transmitted either internally or externally there may be some impediment such as psychological noise and linguistic noise in the encoding and decoding the message thereby resulting in wrong interpretation and consequently wrong feed back will result the message influenced by those barriers that the original meaning of message is disrupted resulting in communication breakdown.
          For communication to be effectively, the message must be put across in a way that the receiver can understand, interpret and give feedback which must be that conceived by the sender the factors that lead to the impediment of communication are numerous and they include noise, distortion, poor ;listening skills, lack of preparation, societal demand, unclarified assumption and bad expression.
          Effective communication helps to ensure the smooth actualization of the arms and the objectives of the the institution as a result of this, there is need to identify some of the the most dominating or influential barriers to effective communication with special reference to equipment. There are many barriers to effective communication in college of education Ekiadolor benin.
          This research work seeks out the most dominating barriers in effective communication in college of Education Ekiadolor.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
          In the view of the foregoing, the following research questions have been formulated for this study.
1.    Does effective communication affects management academic relation in schools?
2.    Does communication results in increasing staff productivity?
3.    How does the floe of communication disturb the layout of an office?
4.    To what extent is linguistic ability an important factor for effective communication?
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This study is to find out the dominating barriers of effective communication, specifically the study is aimed at the following;
1.    To determine whether or not there us relationship between effective communication and increased staff productivity and efficiency.
2.    To identify how effective communication affects academic relations in schools.
3.    Whether ineffective communication does constitute a barrier to institution image.
4.    Indicate if linguistic ability is an important factor for effective communication.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
          The research is aimed at probing into some causes of ineffective communication and to identify the dominating barriers to effective communication in college of education. The significance of this study lies in the hope that the findings and recommendations will be of help to student in particular and other institutions in general in formulating appropriate training programmes for students. This study will also help out a similar research work.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
          This project is to carryout the barriers to effective communication on the performance of student using College of Education, Ekiadolor as a case study.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
          The following are explained here under in the context used by the researcher.
Communication: the interchange of ideas, thought opinions, feelings, message and information in writing, speech, gesture, body language, pictures e.t.c from one person to another.
Communication breakdown: when there is an impediment of distortion of message.
Feedback: when the receiver exchange information with the sender and returns it through a source.
Linguist: this relates to ones ability to use the language communication.
Automation: the use of machines and methods to save human labour (effort).
Institution: these are used interchangeably in this project to mean a formal system of individuals who collectively work together to achieve a goal division of labour.
Barriers: these are impediments which are common or mostly experienced in a situation.
