CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In our society today, drug abuse as a pervasive behaviour is astronomically on the huge. Adults and adolescents are both victims of the psycho-social phenomenon. Many drug addicts in our society do not know that they are addicts. It should be noted therefore that not all users of the substances are addicts. Rather several processes or stages are undergone before one becomes a drug addict. The movement is the reform from drug abuse to addiction. This also means that if one does not use drugs or abuse it, he cannot become an addict.
There are, however, some first time drug users who find non-medical effects out the substances unpleasant such user stop using the substance immediately or soon after the reason for which the drug were prescribed have achieved for some users the habit persists for a longer time. This is the stage of drug dependence. It is a condition in which drug addicts can no longer function efficiently and normally in the absence of the substance he/she uses. The individual has so much used the drug that some chemical substance in the drug has been incorporated into the cells of the body. If he abstains from the drug he develops withdrawal, syndromes which mean he become sick as if some part of his body are no longer functioning effectively.

1.5    RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
Hi:     Students are induced into drug abuse.
Ho:    Students are not induced into drug abuse.
1.6    RESEARCH ASSUMPTION
For the purpose of the study, the following assumptions were made.
That the respondents would give appropriate useful and reliable information.
That the responses given by the respondents reflect what is peculiar to all undergraduates in IMT campus, the whole state and the country at large.
That the respondents would give appropriate useful and reliable information.
That the responses given by the respondents reflect what is peculiar to all undergraduates in IMT campus, the whole state and the country at large.
1.8    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study is important because the result of the finding may stimulate the interest of the staff of the university, school authorities and students alike. This significance is to expose the dangers involve in self medication and to provide measures audience can take for treatment of illness of any kind.
The study serves as an intelligent guide to the government uplifting out those risks involved in self medication and placing more emphasis on it as an integral part of the general public.
