This project is about developing a system, Student’s Attendance System using fingerprint technology. The Attendance system can be used by the university to digitally manage student’s attendance in class or examinations. This system focuses on registering the student’s attendance and report generation. This is achieved by designing a Visual Studio 2010 VB.NET based program for the registration, report generation and attendance taking with the aid of a fingerprint scanner, and a database for storing the student’s information and attendance record. This system – Biometric provide a touch-and-go authentication with-out the need for other forms of identification and improved security. The result obtained shows the efficiency of the system in eliminating problems associated with paper-based attendance systems. In conclusion, this is important to provide the reliable and efficient record.

INTRODUCTION
Biometrics refers to the automatic identification of a person based on his or her physiological or behavioral characteristics. It includes fingerprint, iris, facial and retinal. Biometrics technologies are becoming the foundation of an extensive array of highly secure identification and personal verification solutions. Today, biometric is being spotlighted as the authentication method because of the need for reliable security. A biometric system can operate in the following two modes:Verification and Identification.
Verification: is a one-to-one comparison of a captured biometric with a stored template to verify that the individual is who he claims to be (can be done in conjunction with a smart card, username or ID card).
Identification: is a one-to-many comparison of the capture biometric against a biometric database in attempt to identify an unknown individual. The identification only succeeds in identifying the individual if the comparison of the biometric sample to a template in the database falls within a previously set threshold.
Fingerprint authentication has been in use for a long time and bears more advantages than other biometrics. It has been verified through various applications. In 1924, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been known to have maintained more than 250 million civil files of fingerprints for the purpose of criminal investigation and the identification of unknown casualties. It now is being used in numerous field including financial, medical, e-commerce and customer application as a secure and effective authentication method.
