ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to examined the influence of performance appraisal on employee motivation and productivity in the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Apapa, Lagos. The study was carried out in Nigerian Ports Authority, Apapa, Lagos State. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed and gotten back after completion. Data were collected using Employee Productivity Scale, (EPS) (Chen and Tjosvold, 2008), Performance Apprasal Scale (PAS) (Pearce and Porter, 1986) and The Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS) (Gagne, M., et. al., 2010). The collected data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Regression Analysis and Independent T-test. In this research, the statistical finding showed that performance appraisal has a significant positive correlation with employee motivation. This means that as performance appraisal increases, participants’ employee motivation also increases. Furthermore, from the findings of this study, the statistical finding showed that performance appraisal has a significant positive correlation with employee productivity. This means that as performance appraisal increases, participants’ employee productivity also increases. Finally, the statistical finding showed that there is a combination effect between performance appraisal, employee motivation and productivity. This means that as performance appraisal increases as participants’ employee productivity and employee motivation also increases. The findings were discussed using appropriate theories and reviews.
